Reflection

Background

Nowadays, gender inequality is a serious issue globally. Gender Bias is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s gender. (Cudd, Ann E.; Jones, Leslie E., 2005). In the social perception, people think that the gender inequality is affecting more on women, even the position of the women is raising. However, there is the number of the research showing that there is a gender bias issue in the industry, such as the filming industry. Hong Kong is an international city. I am curious about the gender inequality issue in Hong Kong. In the further research, I would like to examine the gender bias issues in the education industry in Hong Kong.

STAKEHOLDERS

The key stakeholders of the research are the general public, especially people who have the education industry background. Also, the gender equality organisation is the key stakeholder in the research too. It helped them to know more about the cause and the influence of gender bias in Hong Kong. The findings will be useful for them to solve and understand more about the issue.

METHODOLOGY

For the methodology of this research project, there are 2 methods that decided to examine and investigate the research questions. The collection of the data will break into the primary data and the secondary data.

The primary data will be collected through the content analysis and interview.

First, the content analysis method is picking up 10 advertisements from different jobs-matching website randomly in order to analyse the hiring requirement and the expected salary. The job advertisements will be separated into male and female to find out any differences. The analysis would be efficient to get the findings. For the target job advertisement, I would like to target the job advertisement that hiring a tutor for a primary school or secondary school. It is because most of the people in Hong Kong hire a private tutor for their children, especially the primary and secondary school student age.

Second, I arranged an interview for 2 groups of people. The first interview is for the parent who wants to hire a private tutor. The second interview is for the male and female university who are/were a private tutor.

The secondary data of the research is the academic research or paper that is related to this research topic. The secondary data will be collected by the online searching tool. All the data will be analysed to examine this research topic and the research questions.

EXPECTATION

There are three major expectations of this research. First, the research would like to find out if there are a gender bias issues for the private tutor in Hong Kong or not. This is the major question of the research. It leads to the further research question. Based on the research questions, there is two expectation coming out. The second expectation is based on the first research question: What is the relationship between people’s perception of different gender and their choice of personal tutor in Hong Kong? This research question aims to examine the relationship between the gender stereotype and the gender bias in the education industry. The final expectation of the research is that examine the relationship between the social perception on different gender and the gender balance in the education industry. It is related to the second research question: How is the social perception on different gender affecting the gender balance of the education industry in Hong Kong?
